Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter
Director: Timur Bekmambetov
Star: Benjamin Walker, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Dominic Cooper, Alan Tudyk(pronounced Two-Dick)
Visually this flick looks amazing, and the plot is so ludicrous it has to be good. If I convince myself this is a documentary there’s no chance I can be disappointed right?? I encourage you to do the same!

The Watch
Director: Akiva Schaffer
Stars: Jonah Hill, Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn
Good cast, screenplay written by Seth Rogan and Evan Goldberg(who did Superbad, The Green Hornet, and Pinapple Express)….however the fact that this movie is getting a R rating is the only thing that’s allowing me to buy in on this flick.

God Bless America
Year: 2012
Alternate Title: Polite and Pissed
Likes
- As this film gives us a look at the sad reality of what our pop culture and entertainment industry have become, we’re presented with some hilariously great television and advertisement parodies that unfortunately aren’t that far off point.
Dislikes
- The only real disappointment in this film are the parodies of our so called pop culture icons our lead was not given the opportunity to hunt down. I’m looking at you Jersey Shore, Maury Povich, and the entire Bachelor/Bachelorette series.
Final Thoughts
- Comedian Bobcat Goldthwait brings us this hilarious and violent tale that he both writes and directs.
- Through out the flick we follow our lead, played by Joel Murray, who we only known as Frank. A man who’s repeatedly getting shit on and sickened by today’s society……..and well……he’s had enough. Frank undergoes a “Breaking Bad” type of transformation and we get the joy of sitting in the back seat of his stolen Camero and enjoying the entire ride!
- The young Tara Lynne Barr play’s Frank’s 16 year old homicidal sidekick. Barr brings an unexpected spunk and peppy-ness to the story that’s nothing short of hilarious. Her optimism and excitement about such grotesque acts violence only adds to the immense amounts of fun that is God Bless America.
- It can be hard at times know whether to laugh or feel sympathetic during this flick. However I did learn that watching someone get gunned down for simply being rude is oddly gratifying. I think when I become a father in the future I’ll use God Bless America as a learning tool to teach my younglings about proper courtesy and respect……….I’m certain that’s what Bobcat had in mind when he released this film………or maybe I’m just saying that so that my lady friend doesn’t pull her goalie……….I’ll let you decide!

The Raid: Redemption
Year: 2012
Alternate Title: Guns are for Pussies
Likes
- The violence is incredibly graphic and realistic. If you’re not a fan of seeing a few people getting shot in the face mixed in with a butt load of stabbings………..this is not the flick for you.
Dislikes
- The fight scenes gain a gritty feel from the shaky camerawork. However there are instances outside of the fight scenes you find yourself wanting a more stable camera shot.
Final Thoughts
- The Raid is one of the most violent, adrenaline filled, intense flicks I’ve seen in a LONG time. Go ahead and take Assault on Precinct 13, inject steroids into its ass, kick it in the balls, give it a machete, and teach it martial arts……..you then have The Raid: Redemption.
- What starts out as an intensely awesome Indonesian action flick, actually brings the viewer some very compelling story lines. The Raid is not just your typical mindless action flick.
- Director Gareth Evans does not hold back one bit. He’s a man that knows what he wants and absolutely goes for it 100%. Yes, I wasn’t thrilled about how shaky the camerawork was at times, but all in all the direction was extraordinary and the sole reason you’re on the edge of your seat for the entire thrill ride.
- How is it that each and every character you come across in an action flick, or ANY type of flick for that matter, is a martial artist? Not just versed in hand to hand combat, they all seem to be masters in ass kicking. It’s improbable, and more likely impossible, but damn it……..it works………and in the case of The Raid, it results in some of the best fight sequences I’ve ever seen.
- When watching a flick with subtitles I have a hell of time judging if the acting is good or not…….no critique………..just saying………one thing I did learn for The Raid however was that when in a fight, mano-a-mano, in a round of fisticuffs, it helps if you yell REALLY loudly the entire time you’re beating the shit out of someone, not words, just yell wildly and aimlessly. Hell, make words up if you want, just make sure you don’t stop to take a breath, you must yell continuously and louder then your opponent!!

The Possession

It’s been done several times over. Some much more successfully then other……….how will this one fare?? Having Sam Raimi involved, even if it’s just as producer, certainly can’t hurt though!

Dark Shadows
Year: 2012
Alternate Title: The Supernatural Takes On the Fishing Industry
Likes
- Dark Shadows features a well rounded cast. Along with your reoccurring Burton ensemble of Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, and Christopher Lee……..you get some great additions in Michelle Pfeiffer, Chloe Grace Mortez and Jackie Earl Haley.
- Depp steals the show as our lead vamp lost in a modern world, but it was great to see Michelle Pfeiffer get back into the spotlight……..and no, I don’t count her getting lost in the big cast, shitty story of last year’s flick “New Year’s Eve” as a comeback.
Dislikes
- There are certain elements of the story that seem either rushed, forced or just plain unnecessary. To keep this review spoiler free I’ll just leave it at that……
- If you were to tell a woman that she has “the most immaculate childbearing hips I’ve ever laid eyes upon” you are going to get punched in the throat and will never get another chance at that chick………I don’t care if you are Johnny Depp………I call shenanigans Dark Shadows!!
Final Thoughts
- As with all of Tim Burton’s flicks, Dark Shadows is visually stunning and just plain fun to look at.
- One of Burton’s best decisions when it came to making Dark Shadows was to keep it in the 70’s era. He could have easily modernized the story, but that would have most likely taken away from the plot. Having Barnabas wake up in 2012 and spend the entire flick having explaining cell phones, the internet, tablets, etc….would have been incredibly tiresome.
- With that being said…….Burton captured the 70’s era perfectly…..just as the 70’s era captures Burton’s style perfectly. The bright colors of the wardrobe, décor and hairstyles offset against the grey backgrounds making each scene pop. However…..The best thing about Dark Shadows being set in the 70’s is the terrific soundtrack the era attributes to the film.
- Depp plays our ignorant vamp with ease. Both Depp and Burton could have easily gone overboard with the character’s lack of knowledge with the modern times, but didn’t. Too much ignorance can be annoying, just the right amount can be laugh out loud funny…which it absolutely was.
- Although Dark Shadows is not a completely original story, it was still refreshing to see something different. Dark Shadows is funny, strange, silly, and entertaining…..a well executed take of the former TV show by the same name.
- Depp’s character, Barnabas, attempts to break the mold of the all to popular portrayal of the sexy bad boy vampire which I can absolutely embrace. For the most part this is portrayed very well…….if only Depp could act his way out of being good looking…….but I know all to well how that goes myself, we’re just cursed with beauty Johnny! Damn our great genetics and mother’s incredible childbearing hips………….it’s a compliment mom…….deal with it.
